Dmitry Vdovin

Dmitry Vdovin was born in 1962 in Ekaterinburg, Russia. In 1984 he graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (Moscow) as an opera critic and, later, he continued his studies in The Moscow Choral Academy as a singer and voice teacher.

Since 1986 until 1992, he was a music and opera critic, writing for many of Moscow’s most influential newspapers and magazines. At the same period he was the Head of Opera Department of the USSR Theatrical Union.

In 1996 Dmitry Vdovin became the permanent assistant of the renowned Russian mezzo-soprano Irina Arkhipova as a voice teacher and artistic director at her summer school. From 2000 to 2005, he was the Head of the Vocal Department of the Gnessin State College of Music as well as voice teacher at Gnessin’s Academy of Music (1999 -2001). Between 2001 and 2003 he served as Chair of the Vocal Department of the State Choral Academy, where he is still a professor. In addition to that, he has been repeatedly invited as a guest teacher in Grand Opera Studio of Houston (2002-2008) and in Zürich Opera International Studio (since 2015).

Dmitry Vdovin has given master classes all over Russia including Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as in the USA, France, Belgium, Italy, Latvia, Switzerland, Monaco, Mexico and Poland.

In 2012, he was proclaimed The Person of the Year by the music magazine Musikalnoe Obozrenie.

He has been participated as a jury member in prestigious vocal competitions such as Glinka, Tchaikovsky, All Russian State Music Contest, Voci Verdiane, Viotti/Pavarotti, AsLiCo, Opera de Tenerife, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Competizione dell’Opera Italiana, Bordeaux-Medoc and Paris Opera Competition, Grand Opera -TV Kultura (Russia), in Montreal, in Izmir etc.

Dmitry Vdovin is one of the founders, the artistic director and the principal voice teacher of the Young Artist Program of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia (2009 - present). His students have won in many important international competitions and they collaborate, by performing main roles, with some of the most renowned opera houses such as Bolshoi, Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Opera de Paris, Covent Garden, Wiener and Berliner Staats Oper, Real in Madrid etc.
